Samurai Jack with Dinosaurs
I just found out that my all time favorite animator, Genndy Tartakovsky, has a new animated series in the works called “Primal”, and I cannot wait.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name, Genndy Tartakovsky is the Russian-American animator best known as the creator of "Dexter’s Laboratory” and “Samurai Jack”, the latter of which is considered to be his magnum opus, and it’s right up there with “Avatar the Last Airbender” and “The Secret Saturdays” as one of my favorite cartoons of all time : D Genndy’s other noticeable works include “The Powerpuff Girls”, the “Star Wars: Clone Wars” micro series, "Sym-Bionic Titan", and the "Hotel Transylvania” trilogy. Suffice to say this guy really knows his stuff. And now Genndy Tartakovsky is going to be giving us “Primal” this fall on Adultswim, and I can hardly wait to see what he has in store for us.
Tartakovsky was also going to do a computer animated feature length film of the iconic and titular “Popeye”, a movie that he wanted to make since he was a little kid. And when he first started animation his first teacher was a 90 year old animator from the actual Popeye cartoon. But then Sony canned the Popeye movie and instead gave us the universally hated "Emoji Movie”. Way to fucking go, Sony -_- And fuck you Amy Pascal. Check out the Popeye animation test footage if you haven’t already [link] I guarantee the 80 seconds of footage of this computer animated flick never to be is a hundred times better than the computer animated holocaust that is the Emoji Movie. Matter of fact, watch the 80 second test footage a hundred times and boom, you’ve just watched a much better movie than the one Sony gave us.
While the trailer for the news series gives away very little, “Primal”, according to the articles, centers around a caveman at the dawn of evolution and a dinosaur on the brink of extinction. Bonded by tragedy, this unlikely friendship becomes the only hope of survival in a violent, primordial world. And what a violent, primordial world it shall be given what few seconds of blood and gore we see in the trailer. A T-Rex biting off the nose of another T-Rex, a pack of dire wolves with blood all over their mouthes, and the caveman stabbing a dinosaur in the back of the head at least seven times. While I don’t mind a bit of blood and violence in media, I do have some minor concerns as to how much blood and violence there will be and whether or not some of it will be gratuitous. This is Adultswim after all where the majority of their shows have an infantile sense of maturity. However, this cartoon will be made by the same guy who showed restraint with the blood and gore he used for the fifth and final season of Samurai Jack, so if the bloody violence can feel natural there, it’ll probably feel more or less the same in Primal, especially since bloody savagery is required to survive in a world surrounded by carnivorous dinosaurs and beasts.
I know Genndy’s too busy working on his new show to ever browse this site, let alone come across this article by some miracle, but keep up the amazing work Genndy you magnificent bastard you! : D If I ever wanted to make an animated series and I had to choose between the two, I would pick you and your animation team over Studio Mir any day of the century, because I’d want the series to have a unique style instead of looking like an Avatar clone, and I'd want the characters to actually move without causing an economic recession. Well, my brothers once tricked me into taking a swig of Crown Royal for $20. I was close to redecorating the toilet with what I ate that day, and my brother only gave me a receipt.
Another brother of mine got really smashed one night, and he got into a drunken rant about how I use my autism as an excuse for everything. Not sure where this came from being that I never do that, but it still fucked me up.
Aaaaaand my sister pretty much tells me how I should run my life and what’s best for me 24/7. Like, I get it. She missed a number of opportunities to improve her life and shit when she was my age and she really does want the best for me. But at the same time, I feel like she’s projecting too much of herself onto me - trying to shape me into what she never became.

RIP Carrie Fisher 12-27-16
While the first act was clunky and the two main characters were uninspired, the side characters were interesting by their own right; the movie was shot extremely well; the space battle in the third act was nerve-racking; and Darth Vader…well, what can I say? It’s fucking Darth Vader. And his final scene in the movie was downright scary and I loved it.
It’s not ‘The Force Awakens’, but ‘Rogue One’ is still a good flick, and it made me want to watch the original trilogy all over again because of how the ending tied into the beginning of ‘A New Hope.’ So….yeah, you can imagine how devastated I was when hearing that Carrie Fisher, who you all recognize as the iconic rebel leader, Princess Leia, died the very next day on December 27th 2016.
As a huge fan of the ‘Star Wars’ saga, that is such a fucked up thing to wake up to, right after a birthday nonetheless. Princess Leia was not only one of the most iconic characters of the ‘Star Wars’ saga, but to me, personally, she was the very first strong female character in film history. Before there was Sarah Conner; Beatrix Kiddo; and Imperator Furiosa, there was Princess Leia.
Princess Leia was a woman who could get things done, she didn’t take any shit from enemies or friends alike, and she wasn’t afraid to say what’s what. But she also wasn’t afraid to ask for help, admitting to herself that she has needs, and letting others do what they’re good at when it’s wise to do so. And it was none other than Carrie Fisher who provided the face for such a universally beloved heroine.
The writing and directing plays a big part of a performance, but it’s the spirit of the performer itself that brings a character to life. And based on what I’ve seen in her interviews, the force was strong with Carrie Fisher. My absolute favorite was ABC News interviewing Carrie and her French Bulldog, Gary, on ‘The Force Awakens.’ Definitely check it out, it’s fucking hilarious.
The year 2016 hasn’t been all that kind to us, and Carrie Fisher dying was the final nail in the coffin. However, in her latest memoir titled “The Princess Diarist”, Carrie Fisher wrote: “I liked being Princess Leia. Or Princess Leia’s being me. Over time I thought that we’d melded into one. I don’t think you could think of Leia without my lurking that thought somewhere. And I’m not talking about masturbation. So Princess Leia are us.” Think on that.
It’s going to be sad watching the next ‘Star Wars’ knowing that it was Carrie Fisher’s last. But while she’s no longer physically with us, Carrie Fisher lives on as the iconic Princess Leia that forever changed the universe. There are many female characters in the media that are just as strong if not stronger, but none of them can replace Princess Leia in terms of space rebellion. Certainly not Princess Allura, but that’s another matter entirely.
The Force is with you, Carrie Fisher, and you are with the Force.
